How to Wear a Belt With Wedding Dress

How to Wear a Bridal Belt Like a Boss!

Super flattering bridal belts are taking wedding styling by storm in 2019. If you haven't heard of a wedding belt before, we're here to answer all your questions, plus we've got some belting ideas on how to accessorise your bridal outfit. So, buckle up, we're off!

What is a bridal belt?

Also known as a bridal sash or wedding belt, a bridal belt is worn around the waist of a wedding dress or other bridal outfit. Wedding belts are usually made of ribbon and and come in a variety of designs, either co-ordinating with the dress fabric, block coloured or embellished with materials, such as organza and lace flowers, crystals clusters or intricate beading.

Due to the delicate nature of wedding gowns, bridal belts are often ribbon tied at the back. They can be sewn onto the dress or detachable. Bridal belts can be bought from bridal retailers or made bespoke to complement a desired shade or style of wedding outfit.

What does a bridal belt do?

A bridal belt provides several benefits, including bringing a touch of sparkle to a wedding gown. They also create a unique feature – particularly if the gown is crafted in a plain fabric. A wedding belt is also ideal for accentuating the natural waistline, enhancing and streamlining the silhouette of the dress (and wearer!).

When do you wear a bridal belt?

Wedding dress belts are extremely versatile and can be worn during the ceremony, reception and evening. If you're wearing your dress into the evening, adding a glamorous belt is an effortless way to take your outfit from day to night.

What style of wedding dress suits a bridal belt?

Wedding belts usually sit at the natural waist – the slimmest point between the bottom of the ribs and the hips – which flatters virtually every shape wedding gown. They also nip the waist in and accentuate curves, making a desirable shape.

Wedding sashes, particularly ones with beading and crystals, look stunning on princess and ballgown dresses. They also complement figure-hugging fishtail and column dresses. Belts can be worn with empire line dresses, although it will sit slightly higher below the bustline.

Belts also go well with wedding separates, including voluminous skirts and palazzo pants paired with crop tops and corsets.

Designer Catherine Dean does this with great effect in her 2019 collection, using slender satin and jewelled belts to show off fitted bodices and full skirts.

Bridal jumpsuits also look super sharp with a belt. A bold, contrasting coloured belt (see Vera Wang's Spring/Summer 2019 collection for inspiration) adds a touch of drama, while a subtle jewelled belt gives a timeless, elegant look.
